Doing it in your head
10% is the decimal point moved one place left. Everything else is built from it. On a $84.20 check that is $8.42:
- 15% — 10% plus half of it: $12.63
- 18% — 20% less a tenth of itself: $15.16
- 20% — 10% doubled: $16.84
- 25% — a quarter of the check: $21.05

Common questions
- What percentage is a $20 tip on a $92 check?
- 21.7%. Divide the tip by the check and multiply by 100: 20 ÷ 92 = 0.217.
- How do I work out a tip percentage in my head?
- Move the decimal one place left for 10%, then adjust. Double it for 20%, halve it and add for 15%, take a quarter of the check for 25%.
- Can I go the other way — dollars to a percentage?
