The trick
Divide by four. 25% is the one percentage you do not need the decimal-point trick for — half it, then half it again. A $84.20 check: $42.10, then $21.05.

When people leave it
Small checks, most often. A quarter of a $14 lunch is $3.50, and the difference between 20% and 25% on a check that size is about seventy cents — not much to you, and the server did roughly the same work they would have done on a $40 table.
Also: a table that sat for three hours, a bartender who kept a difficult room civil, a regular spot where you would like to keep being a regular, a big group that was hard work, and anywhere a split check made someone’s night more complicated than it needed to be.

- Divide the check by four. A $84.20 check is $21.05, which is the tip; the total is $105.25.
- Is 25% too much?
- No. It is above the common default and it is a normal thing to leave for good service, a regular haunt, a small check, or a table that took up more of someone's night than the bill suggests.
