- How much should I tip?
- There is no single right answer. In US sit-down restaurants most people land somewhere between 15% and 25%, with 20% the common default. Norms differ by country, by service, by whether a service charge is already on the check, and by what you can afford that night. TYPTAPP shows you what each percentage comes to and lets you pick.
- Does TYPTAPP save my numbers?
- No. Every calculation runs in your browser and nothing you type is sent anywhere. Saved tip-out setups are stored in your browser's own storage, on your device, and can be deleted from the privacy page in one tap.
- Is TYPTAPP free?
- Yes, and there is no account. The site is paid for by advertising, which is kept out of the calculators themselves.
- How do I calculate a 20% tip?
- Move the decimal point one place left to get 10% of the check, then double it. A $84.20 check is $8.42 at 10%, so $16.84 at 20%. That is the arithmetic TYPTAPP is doing — it just does it while you type, and handles the cents.
- Can I use TYPTAPP abroad?
- There is a separate travel tip calculator for that. It works in forty currencies, rounds up to the next coin or note the way much of the world tips rather than starting from a percentage, understands a comma decimal, and handles the currencies that have no cents. You enter the bill as printed, the amount you hand over comes back in that same currency, and underneath it the bill, tip and per-person share are converted into your own currency as an estimate — with the rate and its date shown, since the rate you are charged is your card issuer's.
- How do I split a tip?
- Add the tip to the check, then divide by the number of people. Splitting the tip on its own instead of the total is the same arithmetic on a smaller number. TYPTAPP shows both the total each person owes and how much of it is tip.
- What if the split does not divide evenly?
- It usually will not. $100 across three people is $33.34 for one of them and $33.33 for the other two. TYPTAPP hands the leftover cents out one at a time rather than rounding everyone up, so the amounts always add back to the real total, and it tells you when it has done so.
- How does a tip-out calculator work?
- You enter your sales and your tips, then describe your house's rules — 2% of alcohol sales to the bartender, 1.5% of total sales to the busser, a flat $10 to the host. TYPTAPP applies each rule, adds them up, and shows what is left for you.
- How does a tip pool work?
- Everyone's tips go into one pot and the pot is divided by an agreed rule. The most common rule is hours worked: total tips divided by total hours gives an hourly rate, and each person gets that rate times their own hours.
- Can I split tips by hours worked?
- Yes — that is the default in the tip pool tool. Enter the pot and everyone's hours and TYPTAPP works out the rate and each person's share, guaranteeing the shares add up to the pot exactly.
- Can different roles have different weights?
- Yes. Switch the pool to Weighted and each person gets a multiplier on their hours — a bartender on 1.25 earns a quarter more per hour from the pool than a server on 1.0. The starting weights are a common shape, not a standard, and all of them are editable.
- Does TYPTAPP handle cash and credit tips separately?
- It can. Enter them separately and, if you tell TYPTAPP where your house takes the tip out from, it will show what is left in your apron and what lands on your paycheck. Leave it untracked and it simply reports what is owed.
- Can I save my tip-out setup?
- Yes. Name it — “Saturday dining”, “Brunch”, “Closing shift” — and it is one tap away next time. Setups live in your browser only; clearing your browser data clears them.
- Does TYPTAPP work offline?
- After your first visit, yes. The calculators are cached on your device, so they keep working in a basement dining room with no signal. You can also add TYPTAPP to your home screen and use it like an app.
- Is my restaurant's tip pool legal?
- TYPTAPP cannot tell you that, and does not try. Tip pooling and tip-out rules are governed by federal, state and local law and by your employer's own arrangements, and they differ meaningfully from place to place. TYPTAPP does the arithmetic on the numbers you give it. Questions about whether an arrangement is permitted belong with your employer, your labour department or a lawyer.
