The penny problem
A $100 total across three people is $33.333… and there is no such coin. Round everyone up and you collect $100.02; round everyone down and you are two cents short. Neither is the amount on the check.
TYPTAPP hands the leftover cents out one at a time, to the shares closest to earning the next one, and says on screen when it has: 1 person pays $33.34. The total always matches the check exactly.
When the orders were not equal
Open Split by person and give each person their own subtotal. Tax is always shared in proportion to what people ordered. The tip can go either way — proportional to the order, or split evenly on the argument that the service was the same for everyone at the table. Decide that out loud before anyone starts adding up.
A practical note on cards
Splitting one check across five cards is slower than it looks, and many places cap how many they will take. For a large group it is usually faster for one person to pay and everyone else to settle up by phone — the per-person number above is exactly what to send.
Common questions
- How do you split a bill with a tip?
- Add the tip to the check first, then divide by the number of people. A $120 check with a 20% tip is $144, so four people pay $36 each.
- What if it does not divide evenly?
- It usually will not. TYPTAPP gives the leftover cents to specific people — two pay $33.33 and one pays $33.34 — and tells you it has done so, rather than rounding everyone up and collecting more than the check.
- Can I split a bill when everyone ordered different things?
