How to calculate a tip pool by hours

Total tips divided by total hours gives the rate. The part everyone gets wrong is the last three cents.

Total tips divided by total hours is the hourly rate. Each person gets that rate times their own hours. That is the whole method.

Where it goes wrong

Round numbers like that are a demo. Real shifts produce rates like $23.7183 an hour, and multiplying that by 7.25 hours gives an amount with four decimal places. Round each person's share on its own and the totals miss — a $612.40 pool pays out $612.38, or $612.43, and someone has to explain where the difference went.

The fix: work out everyone's exact share, give each person the whole-cent part, then hand the leftover cents out one at a time to whoever was closest to earning the next one. It is called the largest remainder method, and it means the payout always equals the pool exactly. TYPTAPP does this on every split and tells you how many cents it moved.

Practical points

  • Use the hours actually worked in the pool's period, not scheduled hours.
  • Decide in advance how partial hours are counted — to the quarter hour is common and easy to check.
  • If someone worked a double across two pools, they belong in both, with the hours split accordingly.
  • Write the rate down. If anyone questions their share, the rate and their hours answer it in one line.
